The sonata comprises four movements. Ginastera uses polytonic and dodecaphonic procedures in it. The second movement, Presto misterioso , is based on a three-part scherzo, with a fundamental theme derived from a series.
The Sonata was created upon request for the Carnegie Institute and the Pennsylvania College for Women, for the International Festival of Contemporary Music of Pittsburgh, United States. Ginastera dedicated it to Johana and Roy Harris. Johana premiered it in Pittsburgh's Carnegie Music Hall on November 29, 1952. |
