Manuel Gómez Carrillo
Rapsodia santiagueña - Santiago Rhapsody
Work recorded in 1996 by Inés Gómez Carrillo
( First Edition by Casa Ricordi, Buenos Aires)
The following data were mostly drawn from a work written in 1942 by Manuel P. Gómez Carrillo on his father. It was published by the San Isidro Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2001, in the second volume of “Estudios y Documentos referentes a Manuel Gómez Carrillo”, under the direction of Doctor Juan María Veniard.
Premiered by Lila Gaos de Soler on September 3, 1920, at the Sociedad Sarmiento of the city of Tucumán, the Rhapsody became noteworthy based on its performance in Europe by Maurice Dumesnil and Ricardo Viñes. On February 15, 1924, Francis Cassadesus presented its symphonic version, conducting the Concert Symphony Orchestra of the Paris Conservatory.
It is a very brilliant and virtuoso piece. The author effectively brings together various elements of traditional popular origin, among them some belonging to the zamba, vidala, gato and chacarera.
