Commemorating the first anniversary of the death of Julián Aguirre, on August 13, 1925 a concert took place in the hall La Argentina where several pieces dedicated to him were performed. There, Rafael González presented for the first time this Piaggio piece.
Lottermoser published an album with the works performed at the concert, by various Argentine composers. In this Homenaje a Julián Aguirre, Coplas by Pascual De Rogatis and Piaggio’s work stand out. In as little as 54 bars, the author pays tribute to his teacher and achieves a skillful interleaving of the Gregorian sequence Im Paradisum and a theme by Aguirre himself, Triste No.3 in A Minor. Noteworthy are the development, overlapping and counterpoise of these melody elements, within the peaceful serenity that impregnates the work, in a strange combination of religious and Creole lyricism.
