This work is a set of 3 CDs, 42 compositions, performed by Leonardo Marconi’s Quintet and distinguished guest musicians. An important booklet with a text on the evolution of tango in included. To the extent possible, the pieces are performed in the style characteristic of the author and period, to offer an insight into the journey through time of this popular musical expression of Buenos Aires.

The idea for what would become One Century and a bonus. A History of Tango originated in 2005. From the start the aim was to prepare a compilation of tangos by memorable authors, reflecting the evolution of the genre from its beginnings until the present.

It was decided to select an instrumental repertoire that was chosen by the work’s musical director, Leonardo Marconi and by Gabriel Soria, Vice-president of the National Tango Academy of Buenos Aires, who made this selection possible through their added knowledge. In an effort to provide an overview of something so rich in terms of variety and quality, the repertoire inevitably omits other very valuable authors and works. In the beginning the plan was to produce two CDs with some 30 themes; they ended up being three CDs, including 42 compositions.

Most of works were arranged by Marconi. The performances were entrusted to musicians with outstanding professional skills, and their names are indicated for each work. Special mention should be made of our guest musicians, maestros Jorge de la Vega, Horacio Ferrer, Raúl Garello and Néstor Marconi, who make this work particularly outstanding.

The text on the evolution of tango was written by Lucio Bruno-Videla, a distinguished Argentine conductor and composer with a classical music education, who, based on his broad knowledge of Argentine classical and popular music, has provided some little known perspectives on the background and evolution of tango.
